A VERY SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING OF THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL ON INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND POLITICS

5 January 2015

In October 2014, TBG Foundation launched a new and very unique study program called the Washington Winter School on International Development and Politics. The program took place from 30 November to 14 December 2014 at the Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC.

WASHINGTON WINTER SCHOOL

International Development and Politics

30 November - 14 December 2014, Washington, DC

The purpose of the program was to provide young scholars (grad students), students, and young professionals with an opportunity to explore key topics in both of these fields.

Participating students stayed on Trinity Washington University's campus, attended daily 3-hour seminars, and visited key Washington, DC attractions during their stay. The lead instructor and program director was Mr. Faton Bislimi, a Doctoral Fellow at the EU Centre of Excellence, University of Alberta.

At Mr. Bislimi's request, the WWS students were received by several highly-ranked officials in Washington, DC and New York City. The students met with Former U.S. Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, Albanian Ambassador to the US, Mrs. Toska, U.S. Senator, Mr. Flake, EU Delegation to the US, Development Representative, Mrs. Hahlen, and Kosovo Ambassador to the US, Mr. Ismaili.  In New York City, the students were received by the Albanian Ambassador to the UN, Mr. Hoxha, and Former US Congressman and President of the Albanian American Civic League, Mr. DioGuardi.

While in NYC, the students were given an official tour of the UN Headquarters by Mr. Nina, Albanian Deputy Ambassador to the UN. Whereas, in Washington, DC, the students visited the US Capitol, including the US House of Representatives Floor.

All of the students were very satisfied with the experience which they called "a life-time experience." Indeed, there was one opinion piece by a student of the WWS published in the Albanian press in which she speaks very highly of the program and the experience. The article can be accessed here.

Voice of America (VOA) also did a brief story on WWS 2014, which can be viewed here.
