PROJECTS:
Education
for Peace Scholarships at TLU
|
|
Even though he had to leave his birthplace of Gjilan, Kosova at an early
age to come to America for a better quality education, Tony never lost his
connection and attachment for his country and people. He diligently
studied at Texas Lutheran University on a full-tuition scholarship, earned
an honors BS in Computer Science and BA in Mathematics, and graduated
summa cum laude in May 2005. Right
after graduation from TLU, he went to Cambridge, MA where he is now
pursuing a Masters in Public Administration and International
Development at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, as a
Kennedy Fellow.
His being thousands of miles away from his beloved Kosova made his
attachment to his home country even stronger. He has always wanted to help his people. Believing in a
better future for all Kosovars, he decided to undertake the mission of
establishing scholarships for other Kosovar students just like himself to
be given the opportunity of earning an American quality higher
education.
In support of these efforts came The Bislimi Group. And, thanks to the
understanding and generosity of Texas Lutheran University, now we
have the Education for Peace Scholarships Program, which the Group
believes will grow in the future.
Furthermore, another ambitious project in Tonys mind, and something
that the Group fully supports is the establishment of a Kosova Orphans
and Children Foundation. We
believe that to ensure a prosperous generation in Kosova, nothing is more
important than to help make thousands of Kosovar children and orphans
become an equal part of Kosovas new free society. The last war in
Kosova orphaned thousands of young Kosovars, and left many single parents
with children. Given the very bad economic conditions in Kosova, most of
these single-parent children and orphans cannot afford to go to school or
even have elementary living standards.
Most of them live under the poverty line, and a vast majority of
them are forced to engage in child labor to survive.
While this is a generation of Kosovars that will eventually have to make
Kosova work as an independent nation, failing to support them today in
becoming an educated and civic generation is preparing Kosova to fail
tomorrow. Therefore, the Group advocates for social programs or private
initiatives to support this category of people in Kosova. Again, the Group
believes that education can be part of, if not the solution to this
problem.
In an effort to gather support for the Kosova Children and Orphans
Foundation, Tony Bislimi has already decided to dedicate his next book to
this category of people. He has also dedicated to give all proceeds from
his next book to the establishment of the Foundation.
If
you feel called to make a difference for so many young lives in Kosova - for birds with broken wings as Tony refers to the
Kosova children who have been orphaned during the war please join us.
Your contribution, be it in-kind or financial, is very much appreciated.
